The Castle Keep in the centre of Newcastle is the most complete keep from Norman times in England, dating back to 1172. This is the second castle on the site, the original being built in 1080, upon instructions from William the Conqueror's eldest son, following a raid in Scotland. The castle which now stands was rebuilt in stone during Henry II's reign, and was completed in 1178. Part of the castle was then converted into a house in 1618. The Keep stands within a site also occupied by an early motte and bailey castle built by Robert Curthose, William the Conqueror's eldest son. The Castle Keep can be found near the River Tyne, close to Dean Street and St Nicholas Cathedral.
